Stroke

After a stroke some people experience language deficits or aphasia that significantly impairs their ability to communicate.  The severity of the deficits depend on the extent and location of the damage.  Speech pathology treatment is initiated in order to address the following deficits:

  • Dysarthria (weakness in lips and tongue)
  • Apraxia (less coordinated motor movements)
  • Inadequate breath support for speech
  • Difficulty sequencing thoughts together
  • Difficulty with social pragmatic skills
